Statement of intent
What photo shoots do you intend to complete?
My new theme is 'landscapes' and it is a combination of pictures that I taken on the trip to anglesey. These pictures consist of images such as mountains, lighthouses and the seaside.
I will also focus on taking pictures of landscapes because i believe it allows you to explore and improve your skills which i have learnt throughout my whole photography journey.
Before I take these pictures i will have to research my chosen photographer which I am focusing on, and that photographer that I am focusing on is Ansel Adams. I will exceed this theme by visiting the seaside, mountains, lighthouses and other kind of landscapes which can link to my work. I hope to explore all of these options to build up a real understanding of my photography work.
During this project I hope to have visited more of the seasides, mountains, trees, and lighthouses. By exploring these locations i will then have a round idea of the project and will give me a clear understanding on what a good and bad picture is. Whilst at these chosen locations, i will take a wide range of pictures and then i will be able to identify which picture is suitable to be placed onto my Weebly. By the end of this I hope to have included a large range of variety of different types of genres into my work such as Portraits and more shutter speed images.
I intend to visit Galleries such as the National Portrait gallery, I will do this to improve my understanding of portraits so that when I go into to take pictures of it, I know exactly what I am doing.Whilst being here I will also research photographers such as; Ansel Adams, Eric Bennett, and Charlotte Gibb. I will research these photographers because each of these people have experience with landscapes and are experts to do with landscape images. Each of these photographers will also influence my ideas and help to extend and build my knowledge on my chosen theme, Landscapes.
Throughout this project, I will want to use a variety of techniques with the camera and also use Photoshop to help develop the chosen theme. Whilst taking these images i will experiment in taking photos manually and automatically. This will help to portray the themes of landscapes through the focused and blurred images. I will also use a variety of ISO,aperture and shutter speed to experiment the different features with my chosen photographers. Experimenting with the ISO,apertures, and shutter speed will make the final outcomes different. I will also be testing around with Photoshop to see what kind of outcomes I can have. Photoshop has a variety of different features and i will take advantage of this to make my word as unique as possible.
During this project, I hope to have learnt about the theme 'Landscapes' more and carry out important Research on a variety of particular photographers. I will also hope to have learnt to finalize my work into Photoshop and to have the best possible outcome as I wish. I have learnt throughout my photography course and will hopefully successfully put everything that I know into my final piece.

Chosen photographer
Composition
In this image the photographer, Adam Burton cleverly took the image at an angle where you can see the hay and the incredible view of the country side. In this image the sky has been taken so that it is similar size to the ground.
The photographer also took the image perfectly so that your eyes are instantly focused on the views and the blocks of hay. Furthermore, I believe the photographer intentionally used a tripod to decrease the chances of the image getting blurred. Adam Burton took the image on a sunny day so that it is visible for you to be able to see the country side. The photographer has put the image together well by making our eyes instantly attached to the views and the weather. The image has a lighting affect reflecting of the hay, this has an affect on the viewer because it immediately draws our eyes to the reflection, It makes it stands out. From the image we can tell instantly that this image was taken early in the morning for the golden effect and the reflections. The two main colours in this image are green, blue and the golden colour from the sun's reflection. |

Content:
In the picture we see a silhouette of a man, and many shadows created by stairs and pillars. The picture seems to be split into different sections, due to the different levels of the stairs, the floor above it and the wall to the left of the man. With the whole picture being grey, and the shadows, the picture gives off a negative mood, such as despair or gloom.
Comment:
I believe the photograph gives off a very gloomy, dark and negative tone. With the combination of the plain, grey colours to the multiple shadows creeping along the edges, I believe this photo is successful if taken to try and create a creepy atmosphere. I also find the picture very satisfying, seeing how it seems to be split into different sections by the lines of the stairs, floors and walls. The man we see in the picture is completely covered in shadow, making him stand out due to the contrast in colour of him and his background. We also see that he is alone, further implying a possible negative tone due to his loneliness.
Context:
At first my eyes are drawn to the man, and many shadows created by stairs and pillars. The picture seems to be split into different sections/shapes due to the separate levels of the stairs, the floor above it and the wall to the left of the man. With the whole picture having a plain, dark tone, and the shadows, the picture gives off a negative mood, such as loss or despair.
Connect:
This picture links to my desired photos as I also want my photos to have a clear, certain mood that is trying to be given off to the viewer. I also want my photos to be interesting and satisfying/aesthetically pleasing, otherwise I believe photos are pointless without being interesting or beautiful. I think this picture can also be interpreted in many different ways, depending on who the viewer is, which I believe makes this photo successful, which I desire my photographs to be.

In this image i can see the sun glazing onto the damp rocks which is having an effective reflection into the camera. By looking at this picture i believe it is a new image. This picture wasn't edited to make it black and white and is still in co-lour. This image alone doesn't successfully tell us what location it is set out but we can identify it is by the seaside. In this image it implies that there are no people, this has an effect on the viewer because it makes the image look calm and peaceful. In the background you can see the sun glazing onto the sea and onto the rocks which makes the image look undisturbed and relaxing.

CommentI like how the sun has only just got up to the surface and how it is shining brightly to the sky. The strengths of this image is how much of a peaceful and relaxed imaginary it sends to the viewer. The disadvantages of this image are the fact that it doesn't send of any kind of mysterious or gloomy message to the viewer, Personally i believe that when you have this spooky feeling in an image it has a much bigger effect on the viewers. I could use this image to inspire me because this is exactly what i want to do when i go out and take more shoots of the seaside. I believe when the photographer took this image he/she intended to show a untroubled and soundless feeling.

Connection
This image is relevant to my theme because it is a landscape image. The image can link to my work because i have taken a wide range of images by the seaside and will be able to identify what is good and bad about it. This image looks as if it has been taken behind the rocks and personally i really like the image. I like this image in particular because it is pleasant to look at and is restful. I believe this image was taken in col our because it wouldn't have that same strong effect on the viewer if it was taken in black and white. If the image was taken in black and white then you couldn't see the sun glazing and shining onto the sea and rocks.
|
The focus point in this image is the sun rising and the sun reflecting of the sea. The image has been taken from a normal straight on perspective so that you can see the sea,sun and rocks. The lighting creates a contrast between the different types of co lours you can see in this image. In this image the photographer did not use a tripod, you can easily tell ths because of the angle the image is taken.
Waves
Best Image
In this picture I took it from a high point on a mountain to try and get the whole thing in it. I also decided to take it with the sunny white balance as it was quite bright which made the picture suit the weather. I checked my settings correctly, whereas in the other image I went straight for it and just took the image without thinking about the outcome of the final image.
|
Worst ImageI believe this is my worst image because when I was taking the picture I didn't check the white balance and ISO which made the picture too light. Also, I rushed the image and the positioning of the camera was not directly facing forwards. This made the picture look un-professional and rushed.

Bridges
Best Image |
Worst Image |
In this image, I attempted to take it at an angle where you can see the bridge and can see the lake at the same time but later recognized that I wasn't able to capture the lake and the bridge at the same time. The focus on this image wasn't as good as my others because i rushed it, next time I will ensure to take time with my images.
|
In my opinion, this is my best image because the composition and the focus was perfect which is what made the bridge stand out more. I decided to take this image at that specific angle because the bridge size was just right for the shot I was prepared to take. I took the image from the left angle so i could capture the whole bridge and a bit of the sky to show the viewers where I currently am and what my surroundings are.

Graffiti
Best ImageI believe this is my best image because you can see right down to the end of the straight lake and you are able to see the bridge and the boats on the side of the lake. When taking the image i thought that i'd be good to take it at a straight angle to capture everything that's going on in this picture.
|
Worst ImageI believe this is my worst image because you can't see anything but the lake, boats and people. Also, this image has no meaning behind it and the focus wasn't perfect in it. When taking this image i rushed it quite a little as i was walking through Salford, Manchester.

Transport
Best Image |
Worst Image |
I believe this is my best image I used shutter speed to capture the moment of the tram moving towards me. This is my best image, in my opinion because it draws your eye instantly to the tram moving because of the size of it. The camera settings weren't too light and not too dark which made it unique.
|
|
I personally believe that this picture is my worst image because it was taken far away from me which made it hard for the viewer not see the image and it doesn't make it stand out as the other image does. The one thing that went well in this image was that the composition wasn't too light or too dark so you could see the image clearly.
|
Buildings
Worst Image |
Best Image |
This is my worst image because the composition was far too light and so you are unable to see the image clearly. You can see the reflections of the other buildings from the image which is the only thing you can see. Furthermore, I also dislike this picture because it is very simple and plain which doesn't catch the viewers attention.
|
Due to the fact that i needed more pictures, i could only use this picture as my best image of the day. I believe this image was the best one i took all day because you can see the top of the building and the clouds/sky behind it. Also, the lighting could've been better than i was hoping when i saw it when we got back.

Modern Buildings
Best ImageIn this image I attempted to take it so that you're able to view the whole building and the buildings surrounding it. When taking this image I took my time to make sure the settings was set correctly, I made sure that the white balance was was on sunny so that the focus didn't ruin the photo. Just before I took this image i made sure that the camera lens were clear so that you could see the image perfectly. Even though I believe this is the best photo out of my gallery, I believe it can be improved to be even better.
|
Worst imageIn this image I was meant to capture the whole building and only that building but unfortunately i could only capture the main center of the building and the two smaller parts on either side. The trees blocked out the right side of the building which had an affect on the whole image itself because you're unable to see the whole image. Also the glass part of the building is blocked because of the statue reflecting off the window.

Idris Khan photoshop
I have chosen to focus on Idris Khan because his images that he has edited in photoshop are very similar to mine so it will make it easier for me to edit in photoshop when I have to. I believe it was a good decision to choose Idris Khan because he does a lot of images in photoshop of bridges, this would be useful to me as I want to photoshop my bridges images specifically. I'm also going to take a lot of inspiration from Idris Khan tro improve my photoshop skills.
Analyzing my ideas in Photoshop
I placed my photo into Photoshop, ready to be edited.
I selected the 'Crop' Tool and cropped the picture as shown in the screenshot above.
This is my image after I cropped out the building on the right.
Final Image
This is my final image which I believe is a major improvement from the original, since I believe the building on the right was irrelevant and the green advertising banner ruined the picture with its sharp contrast in colour taking the attention away from the building in the center.

Devolving my ideas in photo shop
Here, I dragged in the ITV sign and copied it on both sides of the image to make it look symmetrical. After that, I then changed the colour of it to black and white, but then decided that black and white didn't suit the image correctly so I then continued to change the tone of the colour to Tint so that it showed the ITV's signs that they're there. Once I changed the colour of the image It then lightened up the ITV sign so it makes it stand out more than it previously did.

Second image
In this image I decided to copy and paste each layer to make it form a pattern shape. I also made it all come together by changing every layer from every side. Once I finished the last step I then decided that I could make the same again but change the sizes of some of the layers.

Here, I decided to edit the contrast and the brightness so that it looked more darker just like I wanted it to look. Furthermore , I then wanted it to look as if some of them were bright and the others the same, as if it has not even been touched.

Final Outcome:
I think this image is successful as it follows my theme of patterns consisting of buildings. Also, this theme is about making patterns out of buildings only and as this is a buildings with patterns on it. My intention from this was to show that I have a diamond shape inside of the building itself.
Editing my ideas further in Photoshop
Final image
In this image I ensured that I made sure the image was black and white so that all my images were not just plain original colour like the rest of my outcomes are. I also wanted to make sure that the image still has patterns in it so that it follows my theme that I intended to do.
Taking my ideas further in Photo Shop
Final image
Here, I then wanted to have different kind of patterns in one image and so I decided to make a diamond shape in the image on the left and then 3 original images on the right. Furthermore, I also didn't want to flip the images because I did that in the other outcomes I did before.

Mock exam: Evaluation, 12/12/2019
The project theme we did was landscapes and I found it to be difficult but also exciting as it gave me a task to do. During my project of landscapes I researched a lot of different artists, one of them being Iris khan and Ansel Adams. Ansel Adams in particular gave me many new ideas and happened to share his exploration of Landscape Photography. I discovered this by researching artists that shared my theme of landscapes.
My favorite part of the whole theme landscapes was when we went to Anglessy to take pictures of objects and places in which we can get high marks one. From studying Ansel Adams work I have discovered how to ensure that a landscape picture looks good by making sure the exposure, composition and IOS are all in the correct setting. For example if it was sunny then I would ensure that the white balance is set on light as the picture won't come out well as if it was on a cloudy setting. I also enjoyed developing the pictures and editing them in Photoshop as It helped me get much better at Photo Shop itself.
During my photography journey I have developed and met new techniques that I were not aware of, such as editing my images in Photo Shop. At the beginning of my journey I was unable to edit Photos in Photoshop to a average style however, now I am able to do so. For example, At the moment I have been editing my pictures from the salford trip and I am following a technique which involves flipping and turning images to make them look as if they are a pattern. In Photo Shop I have to duplicate layers and turn them vertically and horizontally to make them into a pattern.
If I was going to develop any idea further I would probably want to develop the one I am working on now which is the flipping and turning technique as It will get me marks If I specifically stick to one technique and one technique only. I have ensured that I am going to stick with this project because If I don't do a specific project then It will not be correctly organised as It is supposed to be.
Throughout this project I have researched numerous photographers to try and get a clear understanding on what to do in my Landscape theme and I, half way through the project have decided to stick with one photographer which is Ansel Adams. Originally I was going to stick with Idris khan as he explored different and fascinating ways to edit his pictures in Photo Shop. He had a technique where he added lots of layers on top of each other which I liked but I changed my mind last minute. I stayed with Ansel Adams because his overall focus was dedicated to Landscapes and so I decided to stick with him as he is an expert when it comes to Landscape Photography.
The Photographers have influenced my Photographs by giving me something to look at for inspiration and new ideas. I did many experiments to test out different techniques from different Photographers which turned out to not turn out well. I refined these ideas by not sticking with one Photographer and experimenting with others. I made many decisions throughout the journey and one of these decisions that occurred a lot was changing from different Photographers and techniques. Overall, the photographers influenced my work by giving me new, exciting ideas.
The technique I enjoyed the most was the one I am doing now which is flipping and duplicating pictures to somehow make patterns as it is simple but effective.
The most successful part of my journey was editing my ideas in Photo Shop as I recorded them and got different outcomes from each picture I edited In Photo Shop. Secondly, the most successful part was in Photo Shop because I have improved a lot more in it usually then I have in anything before. I have learnt how to make patterns by simply duplicating parts from images and flipping or vertically editing them.
I encountered one problem where I didn't know how to do a specific technique in Photo Shop which was Idris Khan's project where he duplicated layer over layer on a same picture.
They didn't affect my final prints as I did not save them due to the poor outcomes however I learnt from this to only do techniques in which I am familiar with.
If I was given the chance to do the project again I would ensure that I am confident with a specific technique from the start so I had a better chance to get the Photo Shop outcomes completed.
